another wonderful and long-running independent design magazine is rue. they featured my home, gosh, it must be almost ten years ago and they’re still sharing incredible and inspiring home tours. this time around it’s one of my favorite designers, lifestyle brand and authors, erica tanov. her beautiful 1926 Mediterranean-style house is located in the Berkeley Hills and i’ve seen small glimpses of it before and also follow her on instagram but this home tour shared much more than i’ve seen before and i was instantly charmed — and it also got me thinking, ‘hmmm, do i need more color at home?’. i love her eclectic, bohemian vibe and the warm and cozy home she’s created. erica tanov is also another small shop we can support, so do make a visit to her online shop while her brick and mortar shops are closed. you might also love her book, Design by Nature: Creating Layered, Lived-in Spaces Inspired by the Natural World. and visit rue for a look at the full tour here.

outdoor picnic with vintage wood dining set on the grass. / sfgirlbybay

picnicking — the all American pastime. i love a good picnic, and half the fun is in the preparation. now normally, a picnic is a packed up meal enjoyed outdoors, often as part of an adventure, ideally in scenic surroundings, such as the beach at sunset, a road trip, or even a drive-in movie theater (remember those? the absolute best!). but unless you have access to a park or open beach or lake, why not just enjoy an at-home picnic? even if you haven’t an outdoor space or perhaps a rooftop, go all out inside — spread out some colorful blankets and pillows, literally pack the picnic basket, chill the wine and get out your best picnic recipes — tuna niçoise salad sandwiches (my favorite sandwich ever — just dish it all up and scoop out a rustic bread loaf and drop it in!), deviled eggs, potato salad, fresh fruit, a charcuterie platter — i’m getting hungry just thinking about it! i’ll bet there’s more fun in it than you might think for you and your significant others, and if you’ve got kids, they’ll probably love it. even on my own here i’ve been eating outside as much as possible and it’s lovely! i’ve gathered up some pretty picnicking gear, and some inspiration for you. cheers to making the most of being stuck!

hanging green plants inside rosetta dining room in mexico city. / sfgirlbybay

back when we traveled (sigh) whenever i’d see someone galavanting around mexico city i’d get major FOMO. this place is very high up on my list of must-visits and now that i’ve discovered rosetta i want to go pronto-like. the food looks extraordinary and the lush, garden ambiance just so inviting. located in a charming old house in the Roma neighborhood, its cuisine is based on a deep respect for the Mexican ingredient — their Ravioles de ricotta, limón amarillo y tomillo limón are calling my name! everything on the menu sounds mouthwatering and lucky for us, they even have a beautiful cookbook! we’re going comfy casual, but chic this time around, with a stunning kimono jacket in case the mexico city evenings get cool, over a classic black tank paired with skinny legging pants, and to dress it up a bit we’ll add some sexy slides. on the plane ride, i suggest reading Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia to get you in the mood — with twists and turns on the classic gothic horror story that takes place in a haunted house in the Mexican countryside.

spring decorating inspiration / sfgirlbybay

i’m back and i want to thank all of you for your patience and most importantly for the kind and loving words you shared with me. i know lucy would appreciate them too. all too many of us can relate to losing a pet, but that simply means we were fortunate enough to love one deeply too. so, again, my heartfelt thank you for all the support — it really helps me get through missing her. so, here we are with the changing of the clocks (why again do we do that again?). so it’s spring forward so to speak — which i actually love because daylight savings time gives us all a fresh start and a little more time outdoors. and the time change perhaps also signals a time to bring a bit of the outdoors in — adding fresh flowers to your rooms and swapping out warm wintery hues with fresh white light. it’s an easy fix to give your place a spring makeover — and let all that lovely sunlight in. here are some spring looks to give you a bit of inspiration, and more ideas on that to come this week.

picnicking — the all-American pastime. i love a good picnic, and half the fun is in the preparation — i mean who doesn’t get romantic, nostalgic feelings from a vintage picnic basket? now that we’re vaccinated and able to have more freedom, what better time for a picnic? either in your own backyard with a few good friends, or a picnic packed-up and enjoyed outdoors, often as part of an adventure, ideally in scenic surroundings, such as the beach at sunset, a road trip, or even a drive-in movie theater (remember those? the absolute best!). and if you don’t have access to a park or open beach or lake, why not just enjoy an at-home picnic? even if you haven’t an outdoor space or perhaps a rooftop, go all out inside — spread out some colorful blankets and pillows, literally pack the picnic basket, chill the wine and get out your best picnic recipes — tuna niçoise salad sandwiches (my favorite sandwich ever — just dish it all up and scoop out a rustic bread loaf and drop it in!), deviled eggs, potato salad, fresh fruit, a charcuterie platter — i’m getting hungry just thinking about it! i’ll bet there’s more fun in it than you might think for you and your significant others, and if you’ve got kids, they’ll probably love it. even on my own here i’ve been eating outside as much as possible and it’s lovely! i’ve gathered up some pretty picnicking gear, and some inspiration for you. cheers to picnicking season.

foraging for flowers / sfgirlbybay

i’ve been a long-time follower of florist and blogger chelsea fuss who opened her very first florist shop at age 23, so she’s had almost 20 years of working with flowers and now writes about flower arranging, styles flowers for photoshoots, and teaches floral design classes to students around the world.  she’s got a beautiful new book out, field flower vase: Arranging and Crafting with Seasonal and Wild Blooms published by abrams and it’s just lovely as well as super inspiring. the book covers 28 eco-friendly floral projects — everything you need to know to forage, gather, and arrange fresh and dried botanicals. Each of Chelsea’s arrangements is addictively easy to make, and the featured centerpieces, wreaths, garlands, and bouquets are designed to bring the perfect amount of scent, color, and atmosphere to a room and photographed in the author’s small village in Portugal, where Chelsea’s based these days and teaches her foraging and floral arranging, so you may just be lured into a trip! sounds idyllic, doesn’t it? but until then, i highly recommend getting yourself a copy of field flower vase to start your own passionate pursuit of wild foraging and flower arranging — and follow Chelsea on instagram for more.

as i mentioned recently, i’ve been seeing a lot of green around the internet, and i don’t exactly mean envy, but many of these looks are indeed quite enviable. i just mean shades of green seem to be on-trend lately, and i can see why — green can evoke passion and can be strangely exotic, but it’s also so fresh, lively and bold. add a dash of green to your interiors, whether it be the real thing, like some lovely houseplants, or a beautiful painting or piece of green upholstered furniture and it literally brings a room to life. green is a color that’s timeless, and then again, right on-trend.

feminine bedroom with peach colored curtains and pink bedding. / sfgirlbybay

this week’s color story is one of those very feminine ones — it’s all the many shades of blush pink. from the palest pinks to ruddy peachy tones and those with lavender undertones, these shades are just beautiful. they’ve got that kind of regal, subdued vibe about them — and they just feel calming to me (like a faded winter sunset) and flatter every room and pair well with just about every other color under the rainbow. these shades have been popular for a while now, and i honestly just don’t’ see them going anywhere anytime soon — perhaps just transitioning from trendy desert vibes into more eclectic, vintage-inspired decor. from plush pillows to pendant lamps and cozy bed linens, these pale colors are sticking around for a good while and you can go crazy with them, or just add the subtlest bits around your abode.

now that i’m living at the beach, and on an acre-wide cactus garden, i’ve gotten really into outdoor living. i have succulents, cacti, bamboo and all kinds of palm trees surrounding my little cottage, and not only are they beautiful, but they’re also all such low maintenance plants! they’re all drought-tolerant so they need very little water, and they propagate all on their own, so the more the merrier. i’ve rounded up some low maintenance looks for you — some more than others, although they say once a living wall gets going it never stops! i really love the look of these cactus paddles hanging, too, so i may have to try that as i’m soaking in these last days of warm california weather!
