teal and orange decor at botanic kitchen / sfgirlbybay

okay, so we’ve been on a bit of a botanical binge lately, but can you blame us? it’s the tail end of summer and we’re trying to milk all the leftover warm days for what they’re worth. we’re also having a moment for home grown, and seasonal menus — thus huntingdon, england’s botanic kitchen satisfies all our cravings. you’ll fit right into these dreamy interiors designed by kiwi & pom with our hand-picked wear this there for the week — a mod white frock ties down an outfit appropriate for a garden party. and this week’s read this there is current best seller, a man called ove.

heart home magazine.

feeling stressed out? you might want to get some houseplants. studies have shown that having plants around can actually help lower stress levels. plus, there are several types of plants that improve the quality of the air in your home by removing toxins and increasing oxygen, which is also helpful in times of stress! besides all that good stuff, well-placed plants can brighten up your home and create a more relaxed, peaceful ambiance. if you’re still on the fence about adding more greenery to your life, here are some pretty, plant-filled spaces to inspire you.

large white paper lanterns over modern dining table. / sfgirlbybay

it’s the end of a long week, and therefore my friends, it’s time for my friday finds. i could mention all the political issues of the day, but i’m just not in the mood. instead, i bring you a little more of that pantone color of the year: green — in a variety of manner, from fashion to decor, good old green goes a long way to lighten the day. have a great weekend, everyone. xo, victoria

  1. it’s really rather amazing the impact large but very inexpensive paper lanterns can make in a room. design on a dime!
  2. fine little day’s rose poster print is oh so cheery and i love all that color.
  3. doesn’t this studio look like the dreamiest spot to work? filled with greenery, art and all that lovely light!
  4. belonging to photographer Anna Malmberg this is such an inspiring studio space too.
  5. this image by photography duo ulas & merve just makes me want to one, wear more colorful socks, and two — take a long leisurely but stylish nap.
  6. speaking of being lazy — where they create photographed by frederik vercruysse is a lush place i could sit and read the days away.
  7. don’t you sometimes kinda wish we still got dressed like this? i mean, she’s wearing ‘glovelets’.

brooke holm for inside out magazine.

i’ve been pretty reserved thus far this week, sharing loads of neutral looks. but, it’s time to go to funky town. uniquely creative rooms that pair quirky colors and patterns — unexpected layered looks that take quite a bit of bravado to pull off. can you do it? i’d love to try and i’ve been thinking maybe i just go nuts in my guest room. i thought about painting the ceiling a bold color and hanging an unusual chandelier and then adding some seriously mismatched prints on the bed. not sure i’ll ultimately be able to pull it off, but these decorators certainly have nailed it — it’s a very gutsy dorothy draper-esque kinda look. one great way to get this look going is to start with a wallpapered wall and build layers with textiles like rugs and pillows — from there the sky’s the limit. i’m seeing a lot of mixed prints in fashion, too (like the latest collection from gucci), so as often happens in the design world perhaps it’s filtering on down to decor.

i’ve been confused all week as to what time it is. along with the jet lag from my trip, came also the changing of the clocks (why again do we do that?). so it’s spring forward so to speak — which i actually love because daylight savings time gives us all a little more time outdoors. and the time change perhaps also signals a time to bring a bit of the outdoors in — adding fresh flowers to your rooms and swapping out warm wintery hues with fresh greens and pinks. it’s an easy fix you know to give your place a spring makeover — just change out those pillow covers and throws, and maybe swap out your rug (or simply put it away for the warmer seasons). here’s some spring looks to give you a hint on how.

hotel magique's artwork. / sfgirlbybay

this week’s friday finds i appear to be immersed in nature, or at the very least greenery and florals of all kinds — call it spring fever if you will. everything is in bloom and reminding me how much i love bringing nature inside, as well as a good time frolicking outside! it’s gonna be a warm one here in L.A. this weekend — hope you can get out and enjoy some good weather, too. xo, victoria

  1. this is a thing of true beauty — hotel magique’s artwork is velvet with handpainted pink type. hello there gorgeous, indeed.
  2. the berlin-based freunde von freunden apartment is so ready for spring. lookee lookee how fresh and easy it looks.
  3. i love this interactive floating flower garden featured on the cool hunter. created by TeamLab, a Japanese collective of architects, designers, artists, programmers and engineers, they installed a large-scale retrospective of their work at the Miraikan National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation in Tokyo.
  4. this is one of my all time favorite kitchens. all that light pouring in, all that nature — just so bright and uplifting.
  5. got spring fever, too? then paint your front door a killer shade of orange. plant a camellia shrub to complement it perfectly.
  6. if your on the west coast, especially california, the bougainvillea is out of control, a super bloom of it’s very own. don’t believe me — just look at instagram.
  7. everything about this splendid dining space is bringing the outdoors inside — just look at that great grassy art print. cool.

roll your eyes in our direction, but yes this is yet another paris-based wear this there! it’s not our fault the city has an overwhelming abundance of cute cafes. peonies paris may be the most swoon-worthy yet though — with a founder that fulfills all our french girl beauty desires, and a concept that’s so simply perfect the whole world wishes they thought of it first. peonies is a café and flower shop concept brimming with fresh provincial blooms and little bites. it’s only appropriate that we pull from some of the best Parisienne brands such as rouje, and wannabe ones like the seattle-based french girl organics beauty line. nail the coquettish style with the perfect woven tote and laissez-faire attitude that allows one to spend all afternoon in a coffee shop (no one’s judging). this week’s read this there is a charming petite novel we’ve heard about but are only just now digging into — the little paris bookshop. it is sure to set the tone.

potted cacti and succulents on the floor. / sfgirlbybay

these days it seems one can never have too many houseplants. it’s almost as if plants are the new black. personally, i don’t have a ton of plants on the inside (but plenty to care for on the outside!) and i like my plant life a little dialed back inside. a simple, maybe more sophisticated display of houseplants — for instance all clustered together in one well-lit place so they’ll be sure to thrive, or on the completely other end of the spectrum, just a lone simple plant like a baby fig or an air plant peeking out from somewhere unexpected, or in a pretty glass vessel. simply lovely.

pale pink and black bedroom wallpaper and decor. / sfgirlbybay

i’ve had a decor crush on the beautiful bedroom treatment just above for a long while now. there’s just something about the playful mix of pattern and textiles that are so unexpected and chic. i’d love to just use a strip of wallpaper as a kind of headboard like they’ve done here with a Chinoiserie print and a contrasting batik fabric. i love dessin fournir’s rose cumming pattern in pink (just below) — the look of a ‘faux tufted’ headboard would be fun!  i’ve painted like crazy however i’ve not done a lot of wallpaper before — but wallpaper and murals can really add a unique and dramatic look to a room, so i’m seriously considering taking a stab at my own version of this look in my bedroom. are you a fan of wallpaper? could you ever do a full wall mural? do tell!

this Jungleland-like studio is that of ceramicist Rena Noordermeer of Studio Hear Hear, a workspace that she shares with her partner Sam (of the Endeavourist) featured recently on haarken. Hear Hear is a small ceramic studio and online shop based in a charming town just outside Amsterdam, the Netherlands offering a range of handmade ceramics and an ever-changing selection of original well designed and responsibly made goods characterized by simplicity and authenticity. their ceramics are beautiful, and why wouldn’t they be having been designed in such an inspiring and beautiful space, full of greenery and lovely bright light? if i ever had a studio space again, i’d hope for it to look much like this!

bright pastel inspirational images. / sfgirlbybay

hello readers! i have some big news for you, but i don’t want you to freak out! okay? okay! so, behind the scenes, we’ve been redesigning the site and it’s getting a completely new look and feel. i have loved the site the way it looks now, but we all grow and change and with it, our taste and style, so honestly i’ve been feeling the need for an updated look for a while now. and, with my move to los angeles where i’ve put down roots in my new home, i felt the site needed to represent my sunny new digs, too. so, with that said — i really hope you’ll like the new look and won’t miss the old site too much — the content won’t change — except to hopefully be improved upon, which is always the goal in mind. we should be launching in a few weeks, along with a few surprises i’ve been hinting at but keeping under my hat — we’re launching a brand new shop on the site with unique, one of a kind vintage treasures we scoured the french flea markets for. i’ve partnered with vintage expert extraordinaire Elsie Green to curate a collection specifically geared towards that modern bohemian vibe we here at sf girl know and love. the sf girl shop will be called super marché and i can’t wait to share all the beautiful homewares and furniture we’ve collected for you!

wes anderson inspiration. / sfgirlbybay

but in the meantime, while we tweak the new site’s final bits and bobs, i thought i’d share with you some of the inspirational images i’ve been collecting to get us to where the new design was at long last, finally finalized. part of the fun for me (and the struggle!) in designing a new site is collecting inspiration and then narrowing down my ideas and coming up with that final design. but i love so many aspects of design that i needed the help of my creative director and designer suzanne shade to explore ideas with me, and guidance of the backend designer jenny Volvovski of ALSO to get me where i needed to be in a practical and technical way. you’ll definitely notice quirky notes of wes anderson who endlessly inspires me, and a new color palette and typefaces for a much cleaner look overall. we’re working to make navigation even easier while keeping much of the existing features — like resources for example. the mobile version of the site will be much easier on the eyes, too. so, here’s some of the inspiration i’ve been gathering and gleaning. also — if there’s anything you’d like to see on the new site, do let me know — your input is invaluable to me, and if there’s something you love to see more (or less) of, please comment below and we’ll take all recommendations into consideration. i’m so excited and cannot wait to share all this newness with you! xo, victoria

funky dining space. / sfgirlbybay

i’m beginning to sound like a broken record, but i think we all know it’s yet again been a very difficult week — this time for the many people affected by hurricane harvey. on instagram, i posted a few charities you might consider donating to if you’re able — even underwear is needed. and NPR has a very valuable list on how you can help as well. texas deserves our compassion and empathy right now so anything you can do, even just spreading the word on how to help may be of some comfort to them. in the meantime, it’s the long weekend and we’ll be off this monday and see you back on tuesday. here’s some pretty friday finds until then. stay safe everyone. xo, victoria

  1. this is one very fun and funky kitchen dining space, is it not? there’s quite a lot going on but i love it nonetheless.
  2. rip & tan has a lovely feature on mount washington ceramicist beth katz, and this lovely collection of ceramics is just the tip of all the loveliness.
  3. how about just one giant cactus in your living room? i’d be down with that if i wouldn’t bump into it in the middle of the night, cuz it looks fab!
  4. i seem to be having a love affair with vintage barkcloth right now and this is a really pretty one.
  5. i have a lot of banana palms around my yard and i love the look of clipping just a couple and putting them on display.
  6. i’m very excited to be heading to copenhagen in october for the first time, and haarkon has a great feature, 72 hours in copenhagen so i’m soaking it up!
  7. this is just the prettiest cactus garden captured by photographer jen huang and all so drought tolerant, too.
  8. another idea instead of flowers — just a few monstera leaves look beautiful in a simple glass vase.

whether your jaunting to NYC for fashion week, or you live a stone’s throw away — out east has to be on your “eat list”. this spot is an instagrammer’s dreamland — millennial pink tufted booths, selfie-worthy wallpaper, all topped with brass fixings — i couldn’t have imagined a better setting. with a menu of seafood and specialty cocktails, this is a prime situation for that long overdue brunch with your girlfriends. hash out that boy talk in your best boiler suit (this apiece apart one is so good), and some of most eye-catching accessories on the internet. you’ll inevitably have a subway ride to and from, so why not plug in your ear buds and listen to Material Girl, Mystical World by ruby warrington on audible — a lady’s guide to living in the modern world, with a spiritual intellect.

my oh my — is this ever stunning! i just had to share this quite brilliant floral design i saw on lenzo created by bespoke Butcher Baker Stylist, and photographed so beautifully by river and fern. i’d probably not have thought to add feathers* to a flower arrangement but isn’t this just something magical? in addition, i saw that feathers are on trend, via this hilarious little video from a young fashionista, @katieryan430. she’s ahead of the curve to be sure! lenzo is an australian-based one-stop-shop party, wedding and events marketplace + directory — to see more of this pretty and very inspiring party visit lenzo.

*kindly note: i’ve just been told these are actually pampas grass flowers, not feathers! nonetheless, so beautiful! thank you, smart readers!

what’s seafoam green, perfectly symmetrical, and wes anderson all over? china’s budapest cafe of course! all our cinematic daydreams now have a place to sit and grab a coffee. this beautiful space was designed by the australian design studio biasol, and set out to recreate all our favorite elements of this beloved movie director’s quirks. for such an occasion one must go all out on the outfit, as this could possibly be your life’s greatest instagram shot. a bubblegum pink sweatshirt layered over a vintage-inspired mini dress, and faux fur bag are fit for a leading indie lady. slip into character and onto a bar stool, hang by the pink ball pool (because when else will you have the chance?), or just occupy the insanely cute bathroom taking selfies — there are endless corners to admire here.

hey hey, happy valentine’s day! do you believe in the romance of this holiday, or is it just a scam brought to you by hallmark cards? i’m single (yet again) this year, but i think i’ll just celebrate me! i mean it’s all about the self-love these days so why not show yourself a little extra care and do something special for yourself? the possibilities are quite endless, but perhaps you need a few ideas. never fear, i’m here to help! might i suggest starting the day with breakfast in bed? well, then i do!

how about you treat yourself to some art? i just joined LACMA because not only do I get to soak up all kinds of artful inspiration, i figure their regular social events could be just the place to meet mister sfgirlbybay. can’t hurt, right? and i love a lazy solo day at the museum with or without hot art-loving guys. it’s good for the soul.

make yourself a ‘mixed tape’ — or a spotify playlist if that’s your jam. i make myself all kinds of playlists on spotify — from workout music, to my DJ V mix, i love all kinds of music and i’ve got a mix for every mood. i find making these mixes quite therapeutic, too. and on spotify i’m constantly finding new musicians per their spot-on recommendations. my latest obsession? father john misty (Joshua Michael Tillman’s made-up stage name) — not only are his lyrics pithy, he’s quite an amusing real-life person, as well.

play hooky. hey, i know it’s only wednesday, but c’est la vie. i think you’ve got a low-grade fever and you’re probably very contagious. so skip work. take the phone literally off the hook and treat yourself right. maybe take a day trip somewhere you’ve always wanted to go. sometimes i just get in the car and drive without any real destination in mind. or, i’ve got an idea of where i’d like to end up and i just meander there slowly — via the long, scenic route. i’ve taken some of my favorite photographs on trips like these. just wander. run amuck. stop by an old diner. drive down a street you’ve never driven before. drive down the block you grew up on. do what you want to do.

stay in bed. all damn day. you deserve a rest. you don’t have to sleep — you can watch all your favorite movies. amélie? check! eternal sunshine of the spotless mind — a thought-provoking masterpiece. wes anderson is always good for my inner child — moonrise kingdom or the royal tenenbaums for a couple of quirky little stories that are sure to put a smile on your face and a spring in your step (the soundtracks alone are worth a watch!).

or, stay under the covers with a good book. maybe a great book. i find literary escapes some of the best. or go totally nuts and visit your local public library — they’re so old school romantic, don’t you think? sit and read a classic, or better yet check out some love poems. take them with you and read in your favorite secret spot.

maybe this is the obvious choice but do treat yourself to a little pampering. a new lip color, maybe two! a trip to your favorite spa – nothing like it to make you feel anew. or, still feeling like hanging in your pj’s? try priv — a new app where they come to you – mani, pedis, blowouts you name it. want to try something a little daring and very valentine-ish? kristen ess has a new Rose Gold Temporary Tint for your hair. if you’ve always wanted to try pink hair — do it! i double dare you!

Purkey). be kind to yourself. be sure and buy yourself some fresh flowers. heck, buy yourself a whole big bush — a permanent one and plant it in your yard to remind yourself that every day you’re growing and you’re gorgeous, weird and wonderful just as you are. happy valentine’s day!  xo, victoria

caffé palladio in india. / sfgirlbybay

in the lush cultural destination of jaipur sits a café that will truly transport you to another time. caffé palladio is an oasis amongst the heat and bustling streets of india, lending a bright mixture of Sicilian meets Arab fare for your culinary senses. the terrace swoons you with the wafting smells of orange blossoms and might just be the perfect place to catch up your reading. this week we’re flipping open the novel the god of small things a story that takes place in india of passionate love, loss, and excitement along the way. a silky jumpsuit will make this endeavor one of comfort and do I even need to say luxury (i mean just look at this place). slip on a pair of our new favorite slides by a bronze age, and waste away a day here — you came all this way!

vintage modern cottage decor in southern sweden. / sfgirlbybay

i really adore the way the future kept sees the world. their latest vision,  photo journal: southern sweden really captivated me. we’ve shared bits from the future kept before — Jeska & Dean Hearne, Husband & Wife adventure seekers and creators of The Future Kept, one part new adventures shared on their journey through life together, and one part online purveyor of well designed, durable, meticulously chosen goods for you to cherish and keep. their shop started with a fascination and desire they’ve both had for a long time, to seek out beautiful and useful items for life and the home that are made with love, thoughtfulness, and detail. Items with timeless qualities created by people with a passion for what they do, and a care for the future of the world we live in. their primary goal with The Future Kept is to inspire more people to think carefully about the items they have in their lives, by putting together a collection of best in class products all with a story to tell. and the journal aspect — well, it’s just lovely. like their latest trip to southern sweden. this is just a small peek at what looks to have been an incredible trip. do have a look at the many more beautiful photographs from the creative duos trip to sweden. and check out jeska’s blog, lobster and swan for more of their travel guides and inspiring content.

pink bar at Sala Equis. / sfgirlbybay

as you read this i am winging my way to joshua tree and excited for a weekend of exploring — i’ve lived in california my entire life and have yet to make it there. what the heck is wrong with me? but as they say, better late than never. and if you’ve got any tips for me, i’d love them. i think i’ve got desert hues on the mind for this week’s friday finds — sultry sunset shades of pink, mustard, and poppy red like this sweet bar at Sala Equis above. i’ll let you know how the weekend in JT goes and be sharing more on Instagram. here’s hoping you have a colorful weekend, too!

xo, victoria

  1. this is such a pleasing color palette and a lovely example of a layered bedding look — this lovely bedroom was featured in this Colorful Family Home tour in Melbourne.
  2. the socialite family is definitely one of my favorite blogs, and this particular home tour is a great one. i love the quirky and unexpected striped & floral bedspread.
  3. as you know, i quite like finding new instagram accounts to follow and @issycroker is no exception. thanks to devol kitchens for pointing out this fetching snap of her’s of burano, venice.
  4. another view of Sala Equis, the new venue in madrid pictured up top, which shares movie screenings but also hosts live musical performances, conferences, and exhibitions along with food and drinks. they’ve swapped the dark, lurid vibe of its previous incarnation (an adult theatre) for an ambiance of decadent sophistication and vintage vibes.
  5. sometimes no label is required. the shape of this perfume bottle caught my eye right away. i don’t even care what it smells like — i’d just like it to occupy space on my bathroom counter.
  6. these are just the prettiest colors inspired by nature — @jasminedowling took what was created from poppy petals and turned it into what now looks like a piece of art.
  7. this mosaic tile just makes the space. and i’ve not seen anything like it framing a doorway before. stashing this idea away for a future project for sure.
  8. this is dappled sunlight if i’ve ever seen it. such a pretty and serene bedroom, but full of style and color, too.

mid-century modern home in melbourne. / sfgirlbybay

Australian natives Kate Stokes and husband Haslett Grounds are the couple version of the phrase “jack of all trades”. One part designer of Coco Flip and another part founder of Grounds Architecture, the pair recently relocated (with their two small children) to a 1966 mid-century dream home set amongst the trees. The open and airy space (thanks to high ceilings, exposed beams, and expansive windows) was designed by famous Melbourne architect, Alistair Knox and nods to the modernist feel of 1960s Melbourne.

When I came across the space via The Design Files (a recent favorite for browsing cool homes that I wish were mine), I knew that I needed to share the slightly moody, filled-with-greenery digs. I’m seriously obsessing over all of the eclectic design touches (like Kate’s sculptural pendant lamps, the clean lines of furniture by Grandfather’s Axe, and a colorful Loom Rugs kilim that grounds the living room). With the help of light wood, graphic yet modern art, and some seriously envy-inducing book shelves, the family’s design style works so well with the flow of the home!

Keep scrolling for more drool-worthy shots of the space.

xx, chelsea
